Return to Work SA needed to streamline and scale the doctor qualification process for Permanent Impairment Assessments while maintaining rigorous standards and compliance.

Return to Work SA faced a bottleneck in scaling doctor qualification for Permanent Impairment Assessments: the existing pathway—manually reading AMA5 and then sitting a written test—was slow, error‑prone, and created double handling across teams. Admin and reviewers were forced into repetitive coordination, manual checks, and rework when assessments were incomplete or inconsistent, which extended turnaround times and delayed downstream decisions. With sensitive information, compliance expectations, and multiple stakeholders involved, the process needed to be rigorous and auditable—but the manual approach made consistency difficult to maintain at scale. The result was avoidable friction for doctors, delays for internal reviewers, and operational drag that limited throughput. The brief was to modernise the end‑to‑end qualification journey so it could maintain high standards while reducing delays, errors, and the administrative load required to certify clinicians reliably.

We delivered an AI-enabled training and qualification system designed to standardise outcomes, improve accuracy, and remove manual overhead. First, we digitised the training and assessment experience through a secure LMS (PIAT), using adaptive assessments to match difficulty and coverage to the learner's progress, automated grading to eliminate manual marking delays, and LLM-generated question pools—carefully validated by subject matter experts—to expand coverage while maintaining quality and alignment to AMA5. Next, we introduced process automation to support governance at scale: role-based access controls, audit trails, and structured reporting reduced compliance risk, improved visibility, and streamlined internal review workflows while minimising rework. Finally, Conversion Intelligence was applied through journey mapping from enrolment to certification, identifying and removing friction points that caused drop-off or delays and ensuring doctors could progress smoothly through to completion. Together, these services (AI development and automation, learning experience design, and analytics) reduced the time required to review Permanent Impairment Assessment reports, lowered error rates while improving assessment accuracy, and shortened the end-to-end time to complete assessments.
